Regardless of an economic downturn and spending budget cuts, the usa will keep its commitments and "robust military engagement" in Asia, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates assured Asian allies Saturday.

Speaking to an annual Asia safety summit hosted by the Worldwide Institute for Strategic Research, Gates told the audience of defense ministers and military leaders, there has become important growth in U.S. engagement in Asia in recent years, "even at a time of economic distress at home and two key military campaigns ongoing in Iraq and Afghanistan."
