Regardless of an economic downturn and spending budget cuts, the usa will keep its commitments and "robust military engagement" in Asia, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates assured Asian allies Saturday.
Robert Gates assures Asian allies of continued military
Speaking to an annual Asia safety summit hosted by the Worldwide Institute for Strategic Research, Gates told the audience of defense ministers and military leaders, there has become important growth in U.S. engagement in Asia in recent years, "even at a time of economic distress at home and two key military campaigns ongoing in Iraq and Afghanistan."

Gates explained, the U.S. file in Asia shows, "irrespective of the challenging instances the U.S. faces right now, or even the challenging options we confront within the many years to arrive, that America's interests as being a Pacific nation -- as a country that conducts a lot of its trade from the area -- will endure."
Gates - who met with China's Defense Minister General Lian Guanglie Friday - mentioned the U.S. was operating with China "to create a optimistic, cooperative and thorough romantic relationship."
He called military-to-military ties with China "a priority" and explained he'd noticed regular development in recent months.
